ROBBERY FROM A BANK.
BRANCH MANAGER SENT TO GAOL. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received July 9, 10 i.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Arthur Charles Cork, ex-manager of the Linton branch of the Bank of New South Waled, has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment, with hard Jaboui 1 , on charges of embezzling £1930 of the bank's money. The total shortage was stated to be £4700. Cork had been in charge of the banK for fourteen years, and had received notice of his promotion to the branch at Jerilderie, iNew South Wales. Consequent upon his proposed removal, Mr. liassell, inspecting olticer of the Bank of New * South Wales, was sent up from Melbourne in order to make the usual examination of the books. This examination, it ia stated, disclosed certain irregularities in the accounts of the ac-. cused. 'The matter, on being reported to the head office, was placed in the hands of Mr. Craddock, bank auditor, and his investigations pointed to a serious shortage in the accounts Cork was very popular in the Linton district, in the public and social affairs of which he had always been prominent. It was stated that he had advanced sums of money to various struggling mining companies in the district in order to enable them to pay wages, and also that he had loaned amounts on mortgage to other companies.
