MASTERTON ITEMS.

(By Tilegrath.— Special to The Post.] MASTERTON, This Day. In the S.M. Court yesterday afternoon, a case was heard ,in which one Edward Astwood was charged with brutally illtreating a dog by dragging it behind a cart for some distance along the road. Evidence was given to tho effect that when accused was remonstrated with, and the dog released, it was in such an exhausted condition thai it had to be carried off the road into a blacksmith's shop, and appeared to be seriously injured. Accused escaped with the surprisingly low fine of 20s and 15s costs. Another case was heard in which Kong Fong, Slick Yen, Ye Hon, and To Klong, Chinese gardeners, were charged with assaulting Timothy Horn. The case created a good deal of interest, as at tho time the assault was alleged to have taken place it nearly led to a serious conflict _ between a number of Europeans and Chinese. After a great deal of evidence had been given, in this case, and in the one in which the above-named Chinese charged Horn with assault, the Magistrate dismissed both informations, each party having to pay his own costs. The public of Masterton is enjoying a period of cheap meat, as the result keen competition between _ the various butchers. The primest joints of ox beef are obtainable at s^d, whilst a fortnight ago 6d was the ruling rate. FEATHERSTON. [By Telegraph.— Special to The Post.] FEATHERSTON, This Day. Feathereton is looked upon as a good place for an occasional sale of drapery by outside firms, and for that purpose the Town Hall is occasionally engaged. Theso visitors do not, in most cases, observe tho ordinary shop hours, but carry on business after the local stores ars closed. This is unfair to the local business people, and the Chamber of Commerce has stirred the Town Board up on the question. This body has recognised the injustice, and in future has decided that s lessees of the Town Hall for sales win have to observe the same hours as the shops. In addition, the fee for the Town Hall will be 10s per day, with 2s 6d extra when the acetylene gas is used, and 5s more for Saturday nights. Mr. D. C. Henderson, who has for the past three years been on the staff of the Marlinborough branch of tho Bank of New Zealand, has received advice of his transfer to Wellington. Mr. Henderson was always willing to assist in any public function being got up for the benefit j of the town, and will be greatly mi6sed.
