OUTBREAKS OF FIRE.
DAMAGE'TO PREMISES AT PETONE. At 5,45 o'clock this morning tho Petone Firo Brigade were called to an outbreak of fire at tho premises at the corner of Sydney and Jackson streets, occupied by Mis. Hyde, bookseller, etc. By tho tirao tlie brigade commenced operations, the -fire had a strong hold on the dinmgroom, tho compartment in which tho outbreak originated. Nevertheless, they were ableto confine t.he flames to tho portion of the building used aa a residence, the shop being untouched "by the flames, although tho stock saffered considerably from smoke. The outbreak, it is thought, occurred through fire from the diningroom grata igniting somo drapery adjoining the mantelpiece. Mr. Hyde was away from tho house at the time. Much credit is due to \- the brigade for the efficient manner in \ which they subdued the fire, which was ' in the centre of a very crowded business portion of the town The stock is insured in the New Zealand , office for £250, while stock and furniture, 'sire jointly insured for £200 in tho Atlas. *l?he insurances on the building, which is cvvnied by Mr. Mayo, axe not ascertaina\\)ie. The furniture was nearly all destroy- &\ while the damage to the building isr<>«ghly estimated at a-bemt £200. SHOP AND DWELUNG AT MJBA-t "MAR DESTROYED. S tiortly after 11 o'clock last night a fire--broi'te out in a building of two stories at the corner of Miramar-avenuo and York-, strea*, Miramax, known as the Dominion., Cash Store. The premises were built for Mr. A*!. 0. Peers about eighteen months ago, uncording to plans prepared by Mr. Na&usub, architect, and liave been in the occupation of Mr. James Patterson for some tipoe past. A strong southerly wind fanned the flames, which reduced tho building- and nearly all its contents to ashes in less than half an hour. Mr. Pattoijson, who resided on the premises with his family, attributes the outbreak to the gale blowing some hot ashes out of the kitchen itre on to tire floor covering- after he had g\tme to bed. FIRE AT PIOTON. [BY TELIIGBAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PICTON, This Day. An eiglit-; noomed house, owned and occupied by Mt\ "W. H. Aubrey, Mount Plea saait, was destroyed by fire last evening. The fire wan caused by tho explosion of a kerosene lamp. Only the piano was saved, tho flames spreading too quickly to allow of tiie remoi/al of the furniture. The insurances tota.l £250, in tho New Zealand v Office.
