TEE VACANT SEE.
+ TO BE FILLED BY THE SYNOD. SOME OF THE NAMES SUGGESTED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received May 8, 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Anglican Synod will meet on 25th May to select a successor to the late Archbishop Saumnrez Smith. Among the names mentioned for the office are those of the Archbishop of Brisbane (Right Rev. St. C. Donaldson) ; Archdeacon Wright ; Canon Thompson, of Birmingham ; Canon Alexander, of St. Paul's, London ; and Dr. Thomas, Principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxjo"rd. The Synod, in its election of an Archbishop, has three methods to choose from. The first is by a committee elected by itself, that will meet the bishops of New South Wales, and a gentleman will loe chosen by concurrent majorities. The second is by the synod electing two gentlemen, of whom the bishops are bound to choose one, and who shall be the Archbishop. The third is by the synod electing one gentleman, and sending his name to the bishops, who have the right in that case of veto, and so request the election of someone else. The bishops of New South Wales have a voice in the election, because the Archbishop will he over them as the metropolitan of the piovince. The new Archbishop may not be Primate, like other Bishops of Sydney. After the election of a new Archbishop, not before, the bishops of the Commonwealth will choose one of the three Archbishops for the office. The Primacy may, therefore, be in either Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne. The Sydney Telegraph learns that it is more than probable that a section in the Diocesan Synod will urge the election as Archbishop of a man from England. Tin's section wants one of the leaders, and a man of mark, among the clergy in the Old Country, and believes that a very able, and even a great, man can be secured. It is also said that it desires a man who, while being a good churchman, shall also be broadminded and liberal.
