■ Col. Hayhurst was a passenger by tho boat from Lyttelton this morning. Mr-. J. P. Firth and Mrs. Firth will leave Wellington foi Sydney by t'ho Warrimoo on Friday. Miss Fitch, of the Wellington Education Board staff, left for tho South by the Hinemoa this afternoon. Mr. R. M'Nab, ex-Minister of Lands, will return to New Zealand by the Maheno which leaves Sydney on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Phair, who is suffering from an affection of the eyes, will be unable to resume duty for another s month. Dr. M' Arthur, S.M., left for Masterton this morning to make arrangements for the enquiry into the Masterton licensing poll. Mr. Justice Chapman and his son will make a trip to the Southern outlying islands by the flinemoa. They will join the vessel at the Bluff. < Mr. G. Allport, Secretary of the Marine Department, left by the Hinemoa to-day to inspect the lighthouses on the east coast of the South Island. Mr. J. D. M'lntyre received a pre- , saltation from the Thorndon Hockey Club yesterday in recognition of his services as coach to the club's third eleven. Mr. Murdoch M'Lean, of the firm of John M'Lean and Sou, contractors for j the Otira tunnel, and the Wellington dock, arrived from the South this morning. Dr. J. A. Macdonald, of Hastings, Havvkes Bay, is returning to New Zealand as surgeon of the s.s. Marnari. He has been studying at some of the London hospitals. Mr. James Lochead, of the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society, was presented with a marble clock yesterday by the office staff on the eve of his marriage. | Mr. R. P. E. Fitzgerald at the Town Hall on Saturday evening in recognition of the fight he made for tho Suburbs seat. The presentation will be made by the Hon. J. A. Millar. At the office of the Wellington Gas Company last evsning, Mr. Goo. Densem, one of the service staff, was presented by a number of his fellow-em-ployees with a handsome travelling bag and umbrella, on the occasion of his marriage. The presentation was made by Mr. Norwood, manager of the fitting department. Miss Adelaide Van Staveren will leave Wellington for Sydney on Friday on her -«vay to Milan to continue her musical studies. Tho journey is being made on the advice of Mr. Alfred Hill. She will be accompanied by her eldest sister, Miss Van Staveren, and both will remain in Italy for several years. They will travel to the Mediterranean by the Nord Deutchet Lloyd steamer Roon, leaving Sydney on the 27th instant, and will reach Milan at the end of next month. Cable advice has been received that Mr. Charles Murray Oram, the London partner of Messrs. Abbott, Oram and Company, died on l4th December. The deceased gentleman was born in Sydrey, and subsequently went to London on behalf of Messrs. W. M'Arthur and Company, of New Zealand and Australasia, and severed his connection with them about seventeen years, ago to join, in partnership in New Zealand with Messrs. Abbott, with whom he has since been associated] in business. j\Lr. Oram had nofc been in good health for some time, and recently underwent an operation, but at lastest advices his condition was not considered serious. He was a brother of Dr. Murray Oram, of Sydney, and son of the late Rev. Murray Oram, of Sydney.
