A CHARGE OF THEFT.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. A man named Joseph Borlace was .charged before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day ,with stealing, on the Bth December, from the person of one Michael Clancey, a gold watch value £5 17s 6d. Stationsergeant Darby prosecuted Michael Clancey, bushman, said he first met accused in a billiard room on Tuesday .week They had a 'game of billiards and a drink, which the witness paid for. A-ccused came out of the hotel behind him. Witness told him he did not want his company any fuither. Borlace asked for 2s. Witness Enid he would give him nothing. Borlace talked fight, and asked witness to come down the lane. Witness refused. Borlace snatched his watchchain and bolted down the lane. Witness followed him They came out near the library, and the chase continued to the Town Hall, where the accused went behind a hoarding. Witness stopped outside waiting for linn to come out. A crowd gatheied. Borlace came out. | iWitness giabbed at him, but missed him. The firemen caught him. The £ham was found behind the boards. Evidence as to the apprehension of j the accused near the Town Hall was given by Frank Ridd and George Alfred Hay, fire brigademen, and Constable Leckie. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for senience.
