A NARROW ESCAPE. EIGHT BOYS IN A BOAT.
[BT TKJLEGBATH. — PBES3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. Word has been received from Marakopa of the narrow escape from drowning of eight lads— John Scott, Gibson, G-ranville, Williams, August, Lane, Bayne, and' Harper. They procured ai flat-bottomed boat, and went across the bar fishing. A wave capsized the boat, and the occupants were all thrown into the water. Bayno and Gibson were the first to reach tho shore. Lane, Scott, and Williams (a Maori) clung to the boat, which became anchored. Williams dived, and cut the painter ; then the boat started to drift to sea. Scott saw a largo shark, and called out to Williams, who said : "I have a sheath-knife ; I'll settle him." Tho lads speak in high terms of tho manner in which Williams behaved. Bayne was about exhausted, and just sinking when ho grasped an oar thrown to him. < Harper (.son of the diver who lost his life in recovering, Elingamite treasure) was also nearly drowned, boing- caught in the backwash. Hose M'Gruth gave great help , in the bjpjfi.
