STORIES OF PLOTS. THE PORTUGUESE ASSASSINATIONS.
A SPOILT PLAN. SEIZURE OF ARMS AND BOMBS. By TjltgTaph.—Presa Accociitlon.— Copyright LONDON, 10th February. The Lisbon correspondent of The Times states that enquiry reveals that a raid and tho arrest of a number of Republicans, with the seizure of arms and bombß, was made three days before the assassinations, and that this prevented the execution of a plot to destroy the police stations, and take advantage of the resulting panic to make a pretenca of setting up a republic. It was hoped to enlist the sympathies of soldiers and sailors. The failure of the plot led a small section of militant Republicans to plan tho assassination. It was intended by these plotters, whose numbers did nfat reach a score, to murder Senhor Franco, the Dictator, and all the Royal family. Senhor Franco's escape was due to his walking instead of driving. • Th<) late Dictator was a man conspicuous for his integrity, but ho had not gauged the seriousness of the situation until tho formation of the new Government forced him out of the country. The public are now pacified, and the general sentiment is calm and loyal. Whatever coolness there was towards the late King Carlos, tho sympathy of the masses is ...ow with the new King Manuel.
