FIRE TRAPS.
rQi Discussing the Post's reference to firetraps in yesterday's issue, the City Engineer (Mr. W. 'Morton) remarked today that non-combustible floorings were even moro important than fire-proof partitions in large buildings. This safeguard, he says, is generally overlooked. It is the general practice in New Zealand to have wooden floors, with the result that fire is free to radiate in all directions. It is desirable, of coui'se, to have non-inflammable internal walls, but the floors claim attention first. The Wellington City Council is not unmindful of limiting the opportunities for flames to run along a floor. The new bylaws provide that all buildings exceeding 75ft in height must be equipped with incombustible floors ; but in the more lowly ones this salutary regulation is relaxed.
