The Chief Inspector of Mines, giving evidence beforo a Royal Commission on tho Newcastle "creeps," said tho cathedral probably suffeTed by being on the boundary of tho two creeps. It was impossible to approach tho old mine workings owing to fire and water. The firo hatl been caused by suppressed combustion. Tho last "creep," which commenced on 17th June, was in the region of Cathedral Hill, on which' the Anglican Church stands. The sacred! edifice was seriously damaged. Cracks two inches wide were made in the walls, and the stained glass windows were wrenched 1 from the casements, bricks being snapped in halves. One half of the massive structure seems to be sagging away from the other wall.
