99 e oi'g9 Chaffey, Avho had pleaded guilty to a charge of theft from a dwelling at Wairoa, also came up lor sentence. His Honour passed sentence of threo months' imprisonment with hard labour, remarking that it Avas a shabby thing to rob his mate while ha Avas away. FALSE DECLARATION. The other case Avas that "of Elizabeth Victoria Shore, who had pleaded guilty to making a false declaration under the Births and Deaths Registration Act. Mr. Yon Hnast appeared for the accused and asked for clemency. Accused, he said, had had a very unhappy married life. She had been married four years, and was not yet 21 years of age. ' Her husband deserted her about three years ago. She took up with another man, and Avhen a child was born she gave the nam,e of the father, and also gave false information as to the date of the marriage. Later on she Avent back to the Registrar and made some alteration but did not fully explain. She had to support her two children, and her husband, Avho had returned to New Zealand, had held this charge over her\for somo time, and eventually brought the matter under the notice of the police, who had no option but to bring the case before tho court. His Honour said he ithought the ends of justice would be met if .accused Avas ordered to come up for sentence Avhen called upon. He j pointed out, howovcr, that he had on other occasions senlencsd both men and Ayomen to terms of imprisonment Avhen the circumsta-nces Avarranted such a couvso. In this case, hoAvever, accused only endeavoured. to protect her reputation. '
