WESTPORT ITEMS.
[BY TELEGR V.PH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION,.] WESTPORT, This Day. During December 84 steamers and four sailers, representing 44,040 tons, entered Westport ; and 88 steamers and four sailers, representing 48,346 tons, left port. The total tonnage for the month was 92,386 ; mean high water in the river, 23ft lin ; at the bar, 23ft 7in ; and the rainfall, 8.89 inches. All the timber for the bridges and viaducts on the Westport Nine-mile railway is now to hand, besides a good deal of the permanont way material. Tenders for the timber work will be called shortly. The Premier has intimated to the Westport Harbour Board that a, report from the engineer and secretary on tho proposal to make Westport an, efficienb harbour for tho coaling of vessels of the British navy will receive every consideration at the hands of tho Government. John Cook, miner, met with an accident by a fall of stone and coal in tho Denniston colliery. His foot was badly crushed, his legs bruised, and his head injured. The gasworks extension of £5000 loan poll was carried by seventy-five votes to ten. There are nearly 1500 names on the roll,
