Menzies pieI sided and referred to the' part which j the Wellington Navals had taken in the defence movement. He spoke in high terms bf the interest and zeal displayed by ex-Chief Petty Officer Harris, whose resignation was generally regretted. Adjutant A. S. Biss, who also 'spoke in the same strain, mentioned that Air. Harris's number on the company's roll was 17, while the number of the last recruit was 896. He pointed out that Mr. Harris had been a very prominent shot and had in various wa.ys assisted to make the corps the premier naval artilkTy company of the colony. The health of the guest of the evening was toasted with great enthusiasm. Lieut Sloman proposed the toast of ''the R.N.Z.A. instructors' and Lieut Denniston responded on their behalf. A number of other toasts were also honoured. Mr. R. Couper, secretary of the Old; Navals' Association, was in charge of the arangements. The annual ball of the Hutt Valley Rifles,, held- in the I>rill Hall on Dominion night, was a great success, elaborate preparations having been made for the enjoyment of the guests. A_ distinct novelty in the way of decorations was introduced under the guidance of Mr. G. A. Chapman, the hall having been prepared to 'represent a camp and fort The effect was capital. ;
