A CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.
STRUGGLE WITH TWO MEN. A shvill whistle in the neighbourhood of, Leeds-street at 11.15 o'clock last night indicated that a constable required assistance. Sergeant Dale and Constable Hudson answered the call, and found that Constable M'Gregor was receiving a rough handling. They arrested Daniel O'Brien and David Harrison, alias Swanson, and this morning •brought them before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to answer various charges. According to the constable, a lady and a gentleman complained to him about two men using disgusting language in Cuba-street. Witness saw accused behaving in a disorderly manner, and warned them to move on. They obeyed, and subsequently walked up Little Taranaki-street, singing and swearing. Witness approached them, and they pleaded for a chance, saying that they would go straight home. Witness gave them a chance, but on hearing O'Brien make use of obscene language in Leeds-street, arrested him. Accused resisted violently, kicked witness and strv.cK him in the mouth Then Harrison took a hand, struck witness on the eye,- on the mouth, and kicked him twice on the ribs. Witness tried to draw his baton, but Harrison seized it and hurled it into the street. Then he knocked witness's shako off, and tore his tunic in endeavouring to pull witness off O'Brien. Witness sounded his whistle, and eventually, aided by Sergeant Dale and Constable Hudson, succeeded in lodging both prisoners in the Jlount Cook police cells. His Worship fined O'Brien £4, in default seven days' imprisonment, for having iised obscene language, and sentenced him to fourteen days' imprisonment for having resisted the constable. Harrison .vas 'fined 40», and ordered to pay another 40s, in default fourteen days' imprisonment, for having damaged the constable's tunic, and was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment for having assaulted the constable. His Worship remarked that Harrison had a fairly bad record, and said he considered tha"t assaulting a policeman was more serious than resisting one.
