AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. [by TELEonAra. — mESS association.} CHRISTCHURCH, 3rd February. The Australasian amateur swimming championship meeting opened at tho Lancaster Park baths yesterday afternoon in perfect weather. There was a very large attendance of spectators, practically all th» available seating accommodation being taken up. Mr. O. Harris, the president of the New Zealand Swimming Council, extended n hearty welcome to the Australian visitors. ■ Two eventa of more thnn ordinary importance were, decided during the afterroon—the lOOyde Australasian Championship and the One Mile Australasian Oha,mpionship. The former attracted nine competitors from New Zealand Victoria, West Australia, and New South Wales. G. Healy, if New South Wnlea, tho holder of the title, did not come over, but H. Baker, who comes from the. same btate, competed, and vron the championship, after a good contest with A. D. HOI, also 1 fiom New .South Wal«. Sm-ingfield, of Queensland, the present holder of the Ono Mile Australasian Championship, defended his title with succesa this afternoon. He slipped through the water at a gTeat pace, and showed no signs of fatigue; in fact, lie finished up with a remarkably fina spurt..
