FIRES ON VESSELS.
PROBABLE CAUSES. [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, 16th June. The enquiry at Valparaiso into tho firo which destroyed the vessel Pitcairn Island, wool laden, bound from Wellington to London, showed that tlie outbreak was due to spontaneous combustion. Tho captain was exonerated from blame in tho matter. It is surmised in London that the fires which have broken out on vessels recently have been caused by tho chemical constituents of sheep dip.
