VOLUNTEER INSPECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — One reads with surprise that orders- have been given for a general inspection on Saturday, 16th June. During his five years' service here the Commandant has not found it necessary to inspect the local garrison troops, and one can only conjecture the reasons which now call for this belated ceremony, in the middle of the football season, and on a Saturday afternoon, when the sun is expected to set shortly after four o'clock. A brigade is an unwieldy body to handle in a place like Wellington ; its movements are certain to be somewhat deliberate, and it will probably be formed up just about in time to commence a night attack. That' would be amusing, if not instructive, and might possibly be worth the £80 or go that the parade will cost the colony. Men could, however, be practised m a night attack without being called upon to give up their football or hockey on pain of b«ing fined £1. Why did this inspection not take place at Easter, when all the troops were doing combined training at Greytown, or during the summer months, or even on 4th June, when a whole day was open? — I am, etc., GLAD TO BE A CIVILIAN. Wellington, 6th June. The public are reminded that the ftketch. exhibition now . open at the Art Gallery, Whitmore-atreet, will close on Saturday next.
