Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, after an hour's audience with His Majesty King Edward, has accepted the task of forming a Govemmont. He receives a. visit from the Duke of Devonshire. It is expected that Sir Robert Reid will be Lord Chancellor. THE FISCAL QUESTION. LONDON, sth December. Mr Chamberlain has denied t^ statement that he was willing that • -cal policy should temporarily take a second place in the Conservative programme. FORMAL RESIGNATION ANNOUNCED. LONDON, 3rd December. A Court Circular formally announces that Mr. Bnlfour's resignation has been accepted. Sir Henry Campbell - Bannerman's audience of the King lasted twenty minutes. Lord Lansdowne and .Earl Cawrlor (Foreign Minister and First Lord 1 of the Admiralty respectively in Mr. Balfour's Cabinet) afterwaids had an audience of the King. The Times expresses the hope that Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, by sincere compromise, will rally all that is best in his party, without whose co-operation the* stability of the Cabinet must be exceedingly doubtful. His success at the polls (adds The Times) depends upon his ability to appeal to the great body of comparatively neutral opinion. It is expected that Sir Edward Grey will be Foreign Secretary, and Mr. Asquith Chancellor of the Exchequer. It is also anticipated that Mr. John Burns will have a seat in the Cabinet as representative of labour. It is understood that Sir Henry Campbi'li-Baimerman, for the time being, will be First Lord of the Treasury. Advanced Liberals suggest t.hat Sir Edward Grey should be Mr. Lytfsllon's successor at the Colonial Office or Secretary of State for War. Other names mentioned ia connection rtith the post of Colonial Secretary are Mr. Sydney Buxton and Air. Bryee". Mr. Her but Gladstone is suggested as Postmuiter-General.
