THE SHOPS ACT. TO THE 'EDITOR.

Sir, — In your issue of last evening, under the heading of " Political Notes," yon have', the following paragraph: — " Messrs. Lairrenson, Taylor, and Fisher have sent a telegram to the Chairman of the Lab6nr Bills Committee, stating they aro strongly in favour of clause- 3 .being made 'applicable to the chief centres, with reasonable exemptions." If, this telegram is correct, it does not coincide -with Mr. Fisher's views previous to <his election. The following question was put to him in writing hy out association : — Mr. F. M. B. Fi3her : " Ate you in favour of small shopkeepers closing -at- 6 o'clock, as compelled by clause 3 of the Shops and Offices Act ?"•— Herbert Seaton. / Answer. — "I am 'not in favour of clause 3—(1)3 — (1) Because it was nqt a6ked for; (2) because it operates with undue harshness upon the small' shopkeeper as against the large houses ; (3) because it inflicts a great hardship upon that sec- ! tion of the community which has to work until 5 or 6 p.m. — (Signed) F. M. B. ! Fisher." If .the paragraph is incorrect, I trust mr. Fisher will immediately correct it, 'and thus not break faith "with several hundred small shopkeepers who supported his candidature. — I am, etc., HERBEBT SEATON, President N.Z. Shopkeepers' Association. Oth August, 1905.
