THE DIFFERENCES OF OPINION.
(Received November 26, 9.26 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mrr Hicksford's message to Sir Henry Canipbell-Bannerinan stated that the preferencfe meeting was a failure, only 700 attending, though the meeting was widely advertised and prominent speakers were announced. Mr. Hickford added that there was a large attendance at the workers' meeting addressed by My. Tom Mann, though it was not largely advertised, and the meeting was unanimously condemnatory of preference. Mr. Chamberlain's reply to Mr. Pleasance, received yesterday, says : "The cauiegram confirms my confidence in the belief that the friendly negotiations between the colonies and the Motherland will result in an arrangement satisfactory to both, and 1 comince even Lord Rosebery that you share our eagerness for closer commercial relations."
