THE FISCAL PROBLEM.
■» THE MELBOURNE DEMONSTRATION. PRESS COMMENTS. [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, 25th November. Referring to the contrast between a cablegram sent by Mr. Pleasance, Lord Mayor of Melbourne, to Mr. Chamberlain, and a message sent by Mr. Hickford, President of the Victoria Freetrade Association, to Sir Henry Campbell-Ban-nerman respecting the preferential trade meeting recently held in the Melbourne Town Hall, over which Mr. Pleasance presided, the Daily Chronicle declares it is striking evidence of the extremity the tariff party in Australia is driven to in bolstering up Chamberlainism. The Daily News says: Mr. Hickford shows that Mr. Chamberlain has been sadly misled respecting current colonial opinion. All the substantial evidence respecting the attitude of Australian workers shows that the colonies take their lead from the authoritative and unanimous voice of Freetrad© Unionism in Britain. Any other course would be treachery to the common cause of labour.
