CARRIAGE OF MAILS.
VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT PAYS TWICE OVER. WANTS THE MONEY BACK. [PRRSS ASSOCIATION. I (Received May 31, 10.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. A curious blunder has been made by tho Victorian postal authorities over th© carriage of San Francit>co mails. Under tho old arrangement tho State remitted poundage payments lo llie Now Zealand Governmeat, who handed ovw to tho contractors. Under the new method th© Federal Government convoyed the mails and placud TRem on board tho steamer at Sydney, and debited each State with tho amount due for its mails. Tho Victorian postal authorities, in odditiou to paying this, continued remitting to New 'Zealand tho twelve shillings poundage rate, oblivious of tho fact that it wns paying twice, xintil tho AuditorGeneral dropped on the matter. Victoria is now seeking to securo repayment of over £3000 from tho Oceanic Company.
