CHARGE OF MURDER.
[us telegraph— tbess association.] ■ MANGAWEKA, This Day. The charge of murder preferred against Michael Maher, of Utiku, in connection with the death of George Cole,- was not commenced until six o'clock last night, owing to the police with the accused having missed the train from .»anganui. Evidence was given by the doctors that the death of Cole was due to peritonitis caused by injury to the stomach. Other witnesses stated that Maher, who had been drinking in the public bar at the Langholm Hotel with deceased, caught the latter two or three times, throwing him to the floor. 'Cole did not attempt to defend himself, but said" to accused, "That'll do." Maher said "I could put you . v^™ y°u would never see daylight again." Shortly after deceased went home he complained of pains in the abdomen, and was seen by passers-by rolling and groaning in the garden. Accused, who was represented by Mr. Scott, resorved his defence, and was committed for trial at Wanganui on 23rd February • A™« two sureties o£ £200 and accused in £300, was allowed and was immediately forthcoming. The case was heard before two Justices, and concluded at 10.30, Mr. Matrayers, Clerk of the Court at Palmerston *iorth. taking the depositions.
