PETONE' S LOAN PROPOSALS

THE CHIEF ITEMS APPROVED. A poll of ratepayers on. the proposal of the Pelone Borough Counoil to borrow ' £38,500 for various public works was taken on Saturday. Out of 746 persons* on the roll entitled to vote upon the proposals, only 272 exercised their' right. Shortly before 9 p.m. Mr. G. Smithies, ' returning officer, made ati informal declaration as to the result of the poll, explaining that a recount of the informal votes would have to be made -before the official return could be given, but in no I case could the result be aftected. The v amounts of the various items and votes ' cast are as follows : — Water Supply, £23,500.— F0r, 117; against, 79; informal, 16. Streets and Footpaths Formation and \ l New Streets, £7000.— For, 1-4 ; against, 70; informal, 19. Drainage Extension, £2500.— F0r, 181; against, 76; informal, 19. \ Gasworks Extensions, £2000.— For, \ 192; against, 64; informal* 17. Town, Hall anil Pdblic Library, £2000. ; —For, 113, against, 139; informal, 20.' Baths, £15W.~ For, 99; against, 147; informal, 22. ' As under the present Municipal Corporations Act a bare majority of votes cast is sufficient to carry a loan poll, it will be seen that the first four proposals, the most important o-f tKose submitted, j were assented to by large majorities. Th& tot^ amount the Council has been given permission to borrow is £35,800. Of the lafrge number of informal votes, the bulk consisted of pikptirs that did not record 4 vote either way.
