Hori Eruera, the Maori boy of St. Stephen's Native School, and champion pole jumper of Australasia, who had been selected as one of the Australasian athletic team to visit England in February, to-day decided not to accept the invitation. Eruera acted upon the advice of a number of friends. This Day. The importers' claims for a refund of duty through the recent fire at the Harbour Board shed approximately amount to £200. James White, who was recently brought back from Australia, has been committed for trial on charges of false pretences. At the Police Court yesterday Edward Thomas, who bolted from the Hagey Institute, and who, though a prohibited person, got very drunk, was remanded for medical treatment for eight days. At a Chamber sitting to-day a winding-up order was made at the instance of the Bank of New Zealand as the petitioning creditor in respect of the Dunedin Timber and Hardware Company, Limited, and also in respect of the City Sawmilling Company, Limited, each of these companies being /an adjunct to Messrs. Guthrie and Co. Mr. Sim consented to the order, but did not admit that the Bank was entitled to the sums claimed. Owing to ill-health Mr. D. L. Luxford, of the literary staff of the Nelson Evening Mail, severed his connection with that paper to-day. The staff presented him with a farewell address, expressing esteem and regret at his departure, aud hope for his speedy restoration to health, and also presented him with a set of ivory chessmen and board suitably inscribed. The prolonged dry weather is causing some anxiety. The drying winds are doing damage to the crops.
