4 AN AWFUL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SOMEBODY. [pbess association.] Sydney. Bth December. The portions of the Stockton pit from which the fatal gases escaped have been walled off preparatory to the resumption of work. (Received December 9, 11 a.m.) Sydney. This Day. At the inquest on the bodies of Curran and Smith, the first two victims of the Stockton colliery disaster, a verdiot of Accidental Death was returned. It was proved that their death was caused by the poisonous gas entering the mine owing to the doors having been left open. There was no evidence to show who left them open.
