UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORKS.

• The existence of distress in Wellington was painfully apparent to-day at the office of the Benevolent Trustees. Mr. A. G. Johnson was kopt busily employed from 10 a.m. until 1 o'clock booking the names of those men seeking for work. Seventy-six married men with families and 33 single men made application. Operations will bo started on Tuesday, at 8 a m., weather permitting, and as many will be taken on as the work will than pormit, In face of the numerous applications for work it is hoped that those oitizons who have not contributed will assist the object by sending in their mitos to the Treasurer. The Works Committee is to be appointed on Wednesday next, after the City Council has nominated its delegates. At yesterday's meeting of the General Committee Mr. John Ross was appointed Chairman and Mr. Jas. M'Lellan Uon. Treasurer. It was resolved to ask Mr. Wm. Ferguson to aooept the position of Honorary Engineer. The Committee will be glad if thoso who have promised subscriptions will be good enough to send their oheques to the Treasurer. A speoial meeting of the Committee will be held on Monday at noon, to dotermine the rate of wages— wliioli will probably be the same a3 on* the Queen 1 * Drive works — and generally arrange for starting work. It is understood that married men will have preference in employment.
