THE SOUTHERN CROSS SOCIETY.

An advertisement in another column announces the formation of a society of New Zealand women formed to promote the amelioration of the conditions of the life of the women of the oolony, for the promotion of such sooial and pnblio reforms as speoially interest women, and to provide opportunities for the acquisition of sound and accurate knowledge of the political and economical questions of whioh (sinoe the extension of the franchise to both sexes) tho women of the oolony havo been lately oalled upon to join in the determination at the polls. Among the objeots to whioh it ia intended that tho society shall first direot its efforts are the following : —1. The extension of the eduoation of women in the political and eoonomio principles. 2. The promotion of purity of administration, both of the general Government and of local governing bodies. 3. To insist that upright charaoter and probity shall be an essential qualification for eleotion to any position of authority. 4. To claim for women equal remuneration with men where the work dono by them is equal. 5. To oonsider and promote ncoessary amendments of 'the laws epeoially affeoting women. 6. To advooato and promote extension to women of the right and opportunity to undertake snoh publio duties as they are equally qualified with men to perform. 7. To advooate and promote reforms in the methods of administration of obaritablo aid by public authorities. 8. To promote the cmso of Temperance. 9. To provide opportunities for meetings of women for disouciion of qnostions of publio, social, and oduoational interest, and for such useful work as the Society may determine to undertake.
