HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

-♦ An ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present—Councillors Allen (in the chair). Knight, De Rosa, Hollow, Law ton, and Trevethick. Correspondence was received assessing the borough's contribution for the year to the Hospital Board at .£ll6 5s 4d, and to the Charitable Aid Board at .£lO5 8s sd. Mr. O'Callaghan asked the Council to pay an account for £1 7s incurred during the last flood in the keep of two families whom he removed from their bonnes to save them from danger, and having nowhere else to place them, conveyed them to Casey's Hotel. It was decided not to pass the account, but to advise Mr. O'Callaghan to apply to the heads of the families. A letter was received from Mr. Price asking that steps might be taken to prevent the shingle from the footpath being washed on to his property by every flood. Consideration was deterred. Mr. T. F. Martin's legal opinion ob to the powers of the Connoil in removing gravel from the river bed the accumulation of which was causing the river to encroach upon certain roads, was to the effect that the injunction of the Supreme Cuurt would not apply to local bodies removing shingle in good faith to clear the water course and preserve the river banks. Councillors Allen and Lawfcon were appointed a committoe to inspect for passing the contract of Mr. K. Hayes for buildinu the bridge at Collett's. Tenders for tho supply of 1000 yards of gravel were opened, and that of Mr. Coffey at Is Gd per yard was accepted, or the supply of rood metal delivered at Alicetown, the tender of Cudby Bros, at lOd per yard was accepted. Purser and Bidley's tender for blacksmiths' work was aocepted. The Committee appointed to inspeot the roads in Alioelown recommended that the work be done by day labour, and that tenders be oalled for the supply of gravel. The report was adopted. It was deoided to request permission from Mr. W. A. Fitaherbert to connect tbe Aglionby-street drain with the open drain running through a portion of his property. Accounts to the amount of .£203 11b 3d were passed for payment.
