WEDNESDAY V. SATURDAY CLOSING.
[Br Telegraph.—Press Association.] Auckland, This Dat, At a meeting of shopkeepers favourable to the Wednesday half-holiday 160 were present, and agreed to form a Shopkeepers' Defence League, for the purpose of defending any prosecutions arising from remaining open on Saturday afternoon. Officers were elected, and the following resolution was passed:—"That this meeting, while recognising the importance of (keeping one half-holiday in each week, is desirous of having the liberty of keeping open on Saturday and closing on Wednesday, experience having proved that Saturday closing is most disastrous to business; and the meeting requests the Government to delay any further prosecution until Parliament meets." The resolution is to be forwarded to the Government, and it was agreed to ask each member of both Honses to support it.
