A meeting to consider a soheme for tbe I formation of a oanal from Sumnerto Christchurch, hold yojtorday, was attended by about fifty prominent citizens, ond the Mayor prc3idcil. Mr. E. Gardner, Civil Engineer, who snbmHted the proposal to tbe meeting, eaid ho had adopted the dimension* of the Snez Canal, viz., width oE bottom, 72 feet, with a slope in the bankß of two to one. This would give a depth of 27 feet at low water and 32 feet at high water. The oanal would be eonneoled with D?o^T<? r o Av 2 n ' The f stimatod co 3 t was •W87.4T2 B*. The material displaced would be^sufficient to raiee tho existing bed of the estuary about three feet above high-waler love .and atsuming that the reclaimed lands would bojKstad in the C-nal Compauy.it would thtfrhavo 1200 acrci, valued at an aoro, as an asset. Aftor somo disoussion a committee Wai appointed to consider tho matter, and roport to another meeting.
