A very large and representative meeting was held to-night to consider the position in connection with the Midland Railway. Resolutions were carried unanimously declaring (1) the necessity of the Government, as trustees of the people of New Zealand, insisting, as a matter of principle, that the oontract deliberately entered into by the Midland Railway Company after due and oaroful consideration should be carried out in is entirety ; and (2) respectfully inviting every member of the Legislature to oppose tho commission of a breach of oontract that must inevitably form a most dangerous precedent and inflict a grievous wrong on this district, which has waited so long end made so many sacrifices in order to be included in the arterial railway system of the colony.
