The Premier says, as regards the proposal that the Government should give a £ for £ subsidy to the local bodies to put relief work in hand, that there is no appropriation for such a purpose, and without the special sanction of Parliament moneys conld not be granted to assist local bodies with local works. As to tbe proposal to establish tho allotment system near Christchurch and the principal towns, the Premior will confer with the Minister of Lands on arrival at Welling'-on. Regarding the request for instructions to the departments of the Publio Service not to employ men overtime, that was acted on some months ago, but the Government has no direct responsibility as to the railways. He will, however, ask tho Railway Commissioners to adopt the same course.
