Application was made that Davis, reoently sentenced to two years' hard labour for attempting to levy blackmail, should be dealt with under the provisions of the Probation Act, as he was a first offender. HJb Honour pointed out that he had no authority to deal with the prisoner under that Act, as the offence was one of extortion.
