The East Coast Maori Election.

\&r Telegraph.] {From a Correspondent.) Gibborne, This Dat. Extreme satisfaction is felt here at the return of Mr. Carroll, as he has exceedingly broad views on the relations of the two raoes, and wishes their position to be equalised in every respect as fast as possible. He advocates that the natives should have all the privileges and responsibilities of Europeans as regards their property. He is a man of very great natural ability, and has had many years' experience in the House of Representatives as interpreter. He is one of the strongest opponents to the present native land policy, and much is expected from him in effecting a final ending of the native land difficulty. 1 Some of Wi Pere'e supporters talk about a petition for bribery and corruption. A strong feeling has been caused by the action pf Government in resorting to unscrupulous tactjes to promote Wi Perg's return.
