EGMONT v. WELLINGTON. This matoh, whioh came off at Newtown yesterday, waa very wel oontested. The altondanoo of spectators was not large. At 3.40 p m. G. H. Smith (Egmont) kicked off. Tbe ball was Bent into touch by M'Canaland, the Wellington f ullbaok, and then ensued a series of scrimmages jaat outside the local goal-line. Evontually tho ball was kicked along tho ground towards the Egmont 25 line. A three-qnarter baok belonging to the visiting team attempted to arrest its progress, but failed, and the Wellington forwards were down upon it in a twinkling. Home loose sorimmaging took place outside the Egmont 25 line, but 'Wellington were unable to got into the visitors' quarters. Wellington were now repulsed a little, but again they approaohed the Egmont 25, and it is possible that but for a run and, a kick by T. Hemp ton, t a brother of the Wellington sprinter, our men would hare succeeded in scoring. After «ome further play ontaide the Egmont 25, C. Hume got possession of the leather and made a pretty run in an oblique direction < but he was grassed before he could get through the opposing books. A aorimmage followed about 15 yards from tho Egmont goal line, and on the ball ooming out it was passed to L. Dixon, who was standing in front of the goal. He hesitated a moment, and the opportunity of potting a goal was thus lost. Egmont now acted on the offensive, and a run by Hempton oarried the ball well up the field. From about- the centre flag King collared the ball and ran right through the visiting backs, drawing first blood for Wellington. The run was a Splendid one; and was some excitement over the feat. Tb,e angle was a difficulb one, and A. Thompson, who was entrusted with the kiok, was unable to place the leather, although tbe attempt was nearly proving snooeisful. When the ball had been kioked off, Wellington rushed down to the opposition quarters, and some interesting play took place outside the Egmont 25. At length H. Roberta got a nice dribble on, but just as he was ooming along beautifully, ho stumbled and fell, and thus lost his chance. Wellington were then driven baok to the centre flag, and front this point Thompson got away with tho leather. The, attempt was not successful, the Egmont baoks collaring him before he oould enter their quarters. Egmont then drove Wellington back, and from about the centre of the field Tate (Egmont) started on a run to the Wellington goal line. He suoceeded in pißsing every one but M'Causland, the full back, who collared him just in the nick of time. After a little play in the Wellington quarters, the Egmont men were driven baok, and on the 23 line C. Humo got a free mark. The -leather waa placed right in front of the goal, and might have gone over the oross bar but for the faot that it bounded against an Kgmont man. When half-time was called tho play was in the Egmont quarters. Cooper, the Wellington skipper, resumed hostilities. The local forwards followed up welt, but the" Egmont quarters were not ihsaded. ' Egmont soon rt turned the tatyea" by rjfßhing'lhe leather np' to the other end of the ground; and fording dowri Wellington. A f ter a good deal of play in neutral territory, Cliffe made an excellent attempt to soere for Egmont. Seeing that he was likely to be collared, he passed to Hempton, who was thrown into touch by M'Cansltnd near the 2b angle. On being thrown out the leather iyaa passed to Willy, who took an unsuccessful pot shot at goal. Wellington now worked their way up to the Egmont quarters, and the visitors were forced down. For the remainder of the spell Wellington had the advantage, being within an aoe of sooring twp or three times. The <? ieitors wejre not able to score, and the match was won by Wellington by a try to love. Messrs. P. Riddiford and E. Davy wero tho umpires, }&r. J. P. Firth acting as referee.
