MRS BAKER FAREWELLED

In the Springston South Memorial 'Hall a farewell social was tendered to Mrs L. M. Baker, who is leaving the district*, Mr M. Ryan presiding over a large gathering. Cards, .table tennis and dancing were enjoyed. The successful card players were Mrs T. A. Hamilton and Mr W. Keast. Mrs H. A. Fletcher was the musician and Mr C. Woods the M.C. * | Several presentations were made after supper. A posy of flowers was handed to Mrs Baker by Betty Keast. Mr S. Bray spoke of the great help that Mrs Baker had given in connexion with social and other district activities and said that she had been a real friend to the school children. She would be greatly missed. He handed to the guest a beautiful handbag containing a cheque, as an expression of regard from the residents. Mrs M. F. Ryan endorsed the remarks made by Mr Bray and handed over a gift from the Women's Institute. Mr R. Bishop spoke on behalf of the school children, from whom Betty Keast handed over a parting gift. Mr A. Baker, of Christchurch, acknowledged the gifts and good wishes on Mrs Baker's behalf.

.."■.'' WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The December meeting of the Springston Women's Institute was held in the Springston South Hall, Mrs A. Moore presiding. The secretary reported that more parcels for soldiers had been sent , and that many acknowledgments had been received for parcels sent earlier. The social hour competitions were won by Mesdames F. G. Roberts and C. H. Heywood. Results of the usual monthly competitions were: Christmas gift costing not more than 2/6, Mesdames P. V. Bailey l, c. Woods 2, W. Mounce 3; rock cakes, Mesdames C. Woods 1, M. JB\ Ryan 2, C. N. Powell 3; bowl of roses, Mesdames M. F. Ryan 1, C. H. Heywood 2; A. Powell 3; large bloom, Mesdames W. Wright 1, A. Powell' h 9"- N- Powell 3; small bloom, Mesdames A. Powell 1, M. F. Ryan 2, C. N. PoweU 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Ryan, Roberts, C. N. and A. Powell, and Miss N. Ryan.

NEW. YEAR DANCE Arrangements have been made to hold a dance on New Year's Eve and full details will be given in tha Guardian next week.
