CHILBLAINS.
SUGGESTIONS FOR TREATMENT.
Chilblains are due to- poor circula- I tion. The hands and feet are far-1 thest from the heart and are therefore the worst sufferers. For instance, when you begin to feel cold leave whatever you are doing and start on some really vigorous task— hard sweeping or shaking mats—and if there is absolutely no energetic job to be done, have a good skip in the kitchen, until you are glowing with warmth all over. A good, brisk walk every day is of tremendous value, always provided you are well wrapped up and prepared to enjoy the coldest of most unpleasant weather. Not only should you wear your winter coat, but you should protect your hands by thick gauntlets, fur or wool-lined, seeing that there is no constriction, especially about the fin-
ger-tips. Silk are as satisfactory as woollen stockings, if you don't like the latter, and you must pay particular attention to your shoes. They must not be in the least tight and should have thick soles, to prevent the cold striking upwards from the soles of your feet.
Internally, you need calcium —that is lime—in some form, as it will help to thicken and enrich your blood. You can get tablets, or a liquid preparation, at your chemist. Cod liver oil and malt is splendid. If chilblains do come, paint them over each night with two or three coats of iodine, and for the irritation dab on camphor liniment freely. If the chilblains break, paint the sores with friar's balsam, and then apply some zinc ointment. You should keep them bandaged until they heal.
