PULLOVER FOR THE EIGHT-

YEAR-OLD

Materials: Five ounces three-ply wool, one pair No. 10 knitting needles, one crochet hook, No. 13,

and five pearl buttons the size of a sixpence.

Measurements: Length from shoulder to neck edge, 17 inches; width all round under arms, 32^ inches; length of sleeve seam, including cuff, 15| inches.

Tension: Seven sts. to one inch in width and eight rows to one inch in depth. Always work into the backs of all cast-on sts., to produce firm edges.

The Back: Begin at the lower edge. Cast-on 114 sts., and work 2in. in k. 1, p. 1, rib. Change to the following pattern:—First row: P. 2, xk. 2, p. 2; rep. from x to end. Rep. these two rows, which form the pattern, until the work measures 10J inches from the beginning, finishing with work right-side to you; then shape the armholes as follows:—

The Neck and Shoulder Shaping: First row: Cast-off 4, work in pat. to neck. Second row: Cast-off 6, work to end in pat. Repeat these two rows until 7 sts. remain, then cast these off. Join wool to the "neck edge of the other 51 sts. and work up this side to correspond with the first.

The Sleeves: Begin at the cuff edge. Cast-on 58 sts. and work two inches in k. 1, p. 1, rib. Change to the pat. as on the back, but at the same time inc. at both ends of every ninth row-until there are 80 sts. and the sleeve measures 15 inches down the middle from the beginning. Now shape the top by casting-off 3 sts. at the beginning of the next two rows, then dec. 1 st. at both ends of every row until 32 sts. remain. Castoff.

Press the work on the wrong side with a warm iron and damp cloth. Join the shoulders by making an eighth of an inch seam on the wrong side, then press the seams open. Sew in the sleeves and press the seams, then sew up the side and sleeve seams and press .them.

The Collar: Hold the wrong side of the neck towards you, and join on wool to edge of front, then pick up 26 sts. to shoulder, 40 sts. across back, then 26 sts. down other front. Work in k. 1, p. 1, rib, but at the same time inc. 1 st. at both ends of every fourth row, until there are 102 sts. and the collar measures two and a-half inches in depth. Cast-off in the rib. Now work a row of d.c. down one front opening, then turn and work buttonhole loops thus: X6 d.c, 2 ch., miss 2 d.c; rep. from x, making five buttonholes in all. Work down the opposite side by working two rows of d.c. The buttonholes should be made on the right side for a girl and the left side for a boy.
