HINTS.

Oxydised metal fittings, fireirons and so on should be rubbed with a cloth impregnated with linseed oil or furniture oil and then polished with a soft duster.

Brick fireplaces should be scrubbed regularly to keep down surface dirt, but greasiness and staining should be removed with malt vinegar or — drastic treatment — spirits of salts diluted with three times the quantity of water. Always rinse after using the latter.

Floor staining on a good floor should be done with oil-stain, as this feeds the wood, shows up the graining and improves the wear. Maintain in good condition by polishing with wax polish.

Scratches on dark furniture should be rubbed the way of the scratch with a cut Brazil nut kernel. The nut oil will not darken the wood.

Carpet stains are usually bound by. some kind of grease. These can be removed by rubbing first with a linen rag wet in turpentine, then with a clean duster.

Electrical equipment should be overhauled at spring-cleaning time. Bulbs should be detached and wiped over with a rag dipped in methylated spirits. Frayed flex should be renewed, connexions examined for signs of wear. Everything should be dry before it is replaced.

Airing a bed can be done thoroughly and quickly by making the bed-clothes into the shape of a tent with a short rod, before you put in the hot water bottles. When this is done, the hot air circulates all over the bed. A bed will keep well aired if it is covered all over with a heavy blanket, tucked in tightly all round.
