VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above, held in the Council Chambers, Clyde, on Thursday last, was attended by (Jrs Jas. Ritchie (chair), C. Weaver, S. A. Stevens, A. C Scoular, R Butcher, F. Partridge, and D Urquhart. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. - CORRESPONDENCE. - was read and dealt with as under: — Mrs Lena Stafford, Ophir applied for permission to put a pipe across a road near Matakanui.—Granted on usual conditions and during the pleasure of the Council. A. L. Mead, Matakanui wrote asking that gravelling be done on the road from Warf to Sawmill. —It was decided that work be clone, and Road luspecor to arrange for same at au expenditure not to exceed £SO. Mr E A Tapper, wrote asking for reduction in his water rates.—No action taken

The Society of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce wrote thanking {the Council for the cordial reception extended to the party that recently visited Central Otago. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, advised that as the recommendations of the special Committee set up to consider the matter of the appointment of group traffic inspectors did clot seem to be generally understood, it was proposed to hold a meeting in the Town Hall, Dunedin .on the Oath April lor the purpose of considering flic whole schemes, —The chairman was appointed to attend the meeting. The chairman of the Main Highways Board wrote enquiring for information as to the royalties collected by the council under section 173 of the -Public Works Act which gives anything to collect royalties for extraordinary use of the roads.—Received, to be advised that no additional royalties had hitherto been collected. The Chairman of the Town Planning wrote advising that a public enquiry was to be held in Dunedin on March 28th for the purpose of hearing evidence to determine the boundaries of the region comprising the city of Dunedin, and the surrounding districts.—The Chairman reported that he had attended the meeting and collected this particular County. He explained that the object of the enquiry was to acquire the necessary information to enable a decision to be arrived at in regard to the regional area and the constructions of a regional committee in accordance with the provisions of the Town Planning Amendment Bill. The under secretary of the Mines Department wrote forwarding amended regulations under the Mining Act 1920. in reference to assistance to prosperity: The rates in the regulations revoked, had been increased approximately 20 per cent all round. The secretary of the N. Z. Counties Assn, advised that a Conference of delegates will be held this year at a date and place to'be notified later, and asking that remits for discussion be forwarded to the secretary. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that if money were required for access for sub-division of run 237 Lindis Cluden S. D. the cost of a bridge over the Lindis river and formation of a road could probably be found by loeding the road by the estimated cost and charging the lessee 5 per cent of the cost of such works. Regarding the question of 4 fourths” being available, the period of 15 years over which these were payable lapsed 6 years ago, and the sub-division of a s. g. r. would not revive paymennt— The matter was held over, the Chairman to interview the lessee. The Minister of the P. W. D. wrote thanking the Council for the invitation to officially open the new bridge over the Clutha, (The James Horn), at Albertown and advising that he W’ould be glad to officiate, if possible. Mr James Horn wrote thanking the Council for the invitation to attend the opening of the Clutha Bridge, and stating that he would be pleased to be present. The District Engineer of the P. W .D advjsed that the balance of tbc grant £74 14, £1 for £? might be expanded on repairs to Brindle Track Jrom Tiuiaru Creek, along the side of Lake Hawea at Taylors.— This had already been dealt with. The Chairman of the Highways Council wrote advising that the Main Highways Board had no authority, whereby they could pay subsidy on interest and sinking fund charges on £I,OOO loan raised by the settlers, for gravelling section of the road between Luggatc and Hawea. C. J. Rattray, Cromwell wrote asking for permission to erect two signs on the Clyde-Cromwell road After discussion permission was granted. Mr A. L. Meade, Matakanui, wrote asking that a road from the neck of his property be made. Writer pointed out that such road would give access to the Hunter Valley, and would undertake to get road put through.— Mr W. A. Bodkin M.P, wrote on the same subject, — Free grant to be applied for. The inward correspondence as read was received and the outward approved of. It was decided to take legal action against the owner of a traction engine on the load which was unlicensed. The Read Inspector’s report was read and dealt >yit|i as under:— It was decided to apply to (he P.W.D. for a free grant of £2OO for the foundation of the road to Meads Matakanui. The lorry to give Swann’s road, Lowborn, a light coat of gravel. It was decided to apply tor a grant of £250, £2 for £l, for redecking the Eirewood Creek Bridge, The power grader to be sent to Ida Valley after completing tlqj work at Matakanui. 1 The old county well near Uuudaas, iHi Talley to tilled in.

A small bridge to be renewed on the road to Mr F. VV. Wilson’s place Omakau. The County Ranger reported that since last meeting he had impounded ten head of stock, 8 at Poolburn and 2 at Earuscleugh. The Dog Registrar reported having registered to date 750 dogs. It was reported that the James Horn Bridge at Albertown, was completed, with the exception of the approaches which was proceeding. The concreting of the piers and abutments of the bridge at Camp Hill, was hi hand. Piles had been driven in the abutment at the Lower Lindis Bridge. Piles had been driven in one abutment and driving in the First pier was proceeding. . Springvalc Galloway bridge the widening of the old portion had been completed, and piles were being driven for the two extra spans, i'hc road approaches were under construction. Tenders for contract No 825 deviation Bannockburn - Nevis road were received— C Smith £317 and John Ritchie £344 6s. It was decided to recommend the lowest for acceptance py the P. W. D. Painting County houses J. T. Downes £69 5s accepted; Orr and Burrows £ll6.
