The Prime Minister of Australia, referring tp the threat of the wine manufacturers to close down their work* owing to the increased excise duty on fortified spirit for wine, said he regarded it as pure bluff adding: “We are governing this country, not they, and I would remind them that we have the power to take any necessary action for the protection of the growers." He continued: “Those shouting the loudest have been caught with large quantities of fortified wine ou hand owing to their having taken undue advantages of the concessions granted up to the present." THBEAT TO BE CARRIED OUT Following Mr Scullin's statement the large wine manufacturers at Adelaide announced that they would be closing; down immediately, rejecting 12,000it0 14,000 tons of grapes, which will be left on the growers’ hands, also causing un-employment among the grape pickers.
