Constable D. W. Black, of Christchurch has been appointed to fill the vacancy at Cromwell, caused by the retirement of Constable Bradley.

The death took place in the Dunstan Hospital on Saturday morning of Miss Belcher, who had been ah inmate of the institution for some months- She a sister of Mr Fred Belcher, of Alexandra, for whom much sympathy is expressed in his sad bereavement.

A tragedy occurred at Chatto Creek at mid-day on Wednesday last when Mr John Bruce, a native of Alexandra, a returned soldier and a married man with a grown-up family, committed suicide by shooting himself with a 22 rifle. The nnfortunate man, who was 55 years of age, was stopping at the Chatto Creek Hotel, and he was in his bedroom when the tragedy took place.
