OPHIR.
A successful concert was given in the Ophir Peace Memorial Hallon Wednesday night, June 22, in aid of the funds of the Spottis Creek Tennis Club. The Hall was well filled and the financial result should be gratifying to the Club. The Spottis Creek school children, under the leadership of their teacher, Miss Gibson, mustered in force and gave a very good display, considering the small s&e of the school. The eight girls especially in their “Hunting Song” and “Archers’ Song” both in ..suitable costumes, did very well; in other item, “The Cheery Boy” nine boys assisted. Two tots—Misses E, Harvey and E, Secular sang and acted very daintily “I don’t want to play in your yard” and little Ivan Corrigall spoke out very clearly in “A Boy’s Lament”. The other school items were a well played pianoforte duet and solo by Misses C. and E. Harvey. Those who assisted were Mrs R, Naylor who sang two songs in her usual good style; Mr Frank Perkins who was a host in himself and was in good voice; Mr D, McDonald with good bagpipe selections : Miss Kathio Berry with excellent performance as a Highland Fling and Sailors Hornpipe ; Mr Joe Scott with four humorous songs ; and Master Frank Bloy, in a costumed Dutch fjfong, who brought down the house, accompanied by Mr Perkins. Mr McDonald played bagpipe accompaniment to Kathie’s dancing, and Mrs Lester tastefully accompanied most of the other items. Mr John Clare acted as Chairman, and at the close of the concert thanked the audience, Miss Gibson who trained the children, the children themselves, and Mr Perkins as well £as the other performers. Mr Clare himself was thanked by a pocket book, presented by the children. The concert began the usual balf-an-liour late, and as practically all the 18 items were encored many of the young children - wore getting tired when “God Save the King ’* was sung at 10.30 p.m. A dance followed the concert, during an interval of which Mr Clare, on behalf of the residents of Omakau and Ophir, presented Mr D. M. McLay, who has been Omakau agent for the Otago Farmers Co-op, Assn, for the last three years, with a well-filled purse, in appreciation of his services to the community. Mr McLay leaves the district for another position and carries with him the good wishes of everyone for his future welfare wherever he, may be placed.
