SPORTING

(By “Bed-jacket”) A meeting of the managenians committee of the Vincent Jockey Club is called for Thursday, 23rd inst. at Bp.m at Omakau.

Mr J. Clare, carrying his left arm in a sling as the result of his hack coming down (without giving timely notice of iis intention to do so) and breaking his shoulder, paid “ Red Jacket” a visit the other day. Amongst other interesting things Mr Clare told me was that he and his good lady intend to take a holiday trip to Australia and will probably leave New Zealand on the 2nd of next month. If they do so they will have an opportunity of seeing tht tail end of the big racing carnival. If there’s a horse race about our old friend will w’ant to see it. May they have an enjoyable trip will be the general wish. A sensation has been caused at Perth by the announcement that a prominent New Zealand trotting marc has been “rung in” in the Eastern States and Western Australia. It is alleged that a mare was landed in Western Australia last year under the name of Gathered ' Gold. The mare lost her first race through being pulled from one side of the track to the other, but she ■won the second so easily that the stewards disuualified her and her nominator for two years for not having tried the first time. The mare was sold for £"io, and the vendors left the State. The trotting officials became suspicious, and instituted inquiries, and kepLthe horse in a private stable. A recent arrival from New Zealand racognised the horse as soon as he saw her. It is alleged that she won races in other States under another name, and it is stated that the New South Wales Trotting Association will take action for alleged “ringing in.” It is reported that the New South Wales Association refused registration after the mare’s arrival from New Zealand. She then raced in country districts under another name, subsequently racing in Victoria and New South. Wales as Gathered Gold.
