THE LABEL THAT TELLS A LIE.
>f . There is to be found on bottles'of spirits now being sold a red label bearing the following fairy story: "Protect your revenue 4s 11M duty paid on this bottle." On "January 6th this year the New Zealand Times" stated that eighteen months to two years supplies of spirits had been taken by thd liquor traffic out of boii'l at the rate of duty, namely 18s per gallon. This is less than 2s 6d per bottie duty. It will be been, therefore that the liquor party's label tells a lie when it states that praotically 5s duty has been paid on the contenta of the bottle. The liquor traffic is now selling the spirits that it took out of bond at the old rate of duty and upon which it had paid only 2a (3d per bottle duty. In January this year a statement was published all over .New Zealand shewing that on the basis of the "New Zealand Times" report the liquor traffic stood to gain £1,500,000 clear profit, by charging customers the extra duty on spirits which i\v\ liquor traffic had not paid. That statement never been denied. Ou the strength of increased duties which they had not paid the liquor traffic raised the prioe of spirits 2a 01 per bottle to tbe oonsumer. In addition to this, whisky wan costing 4s 7d per gallon less in 1021 than it did in 1920. This economy in price means, on the 4021 year's import no less than (.'104,000 clear prolit. Whisky costing ;}os M per gallon, os 3d per bottle, including duty, including duty, when gold by the nip yields to the liquor traffic 21s per bo'.tie of £7 7s per gallon. No winder the liquor traffic can all'oid to spend hundreds of thousands in enor mous advertising, and in tbe payment of canvaseerb in tbe effort to maintain its monopoly and secure another throe years in which (o plunder drinkers.
