Drowning Fatality on the Halfway House Dredge.
On Thursday, at 8 30 p in, two men started to go ashore off the above dredge, now known as the Morning Light, but as the boat was alongside _ the shore they clambered along the .side line. They had only about 50 feet to go to reach the edge of the river bank. The first man, William Orr, went over easily as lie started with his head to the shore, but second one, David Anderson unfortunately went feet foremost. When close to the shore his feet encountered the traveller of the boat, which apparently was jammed. After trying to get his feet over the obstacle for some time he let go ids grip and fell his feet just touching the edge of the beach. He fell back into the rip and was instantly swept away by the tremendous cvrrent. Had he gone over in the same style as Orr, there is no doubt buthe would have landed safely. The wire rope was only six feet above the level of the beach. Anderson was a heavy man and it is supposes that he was seized with cramp. A son of his, a young man aggd nineteen is in the employment of the Hon Mr Gourlay M. L. C.
