A Blue Book contains a letter found ia the Landdrost's office at Bloemfontein, and written just prior to the war by Mr Blignant, brother of the late Orange Free State Secretare. In it the writer expressed, the fear that " Chamberlain may cheat us out of a war, and so deprive us of an opportunity of annexing Cape Colony and Natal, and thus of forming a republican United States of South Africa." The writer added that forty-six thousand fighting men had pledged themselves to secure the independence of South Africa.
