A calf whale, of the black species, was cast ashore at the Spit earl/ this morning, on the beach at the back" of the keroeene bond. The creature measures fifteen feet. It was dead when it was washed up.

"■■■ A false impression is being endeavored to be created that Mr Black, the Inspector of Nuisances for tho borough, is tho author of the echome now beinjr carried out for the diversion of the Tutaekuri river. The original idea was Mr G. Kymer's, -who suggested it to Mr Black, who then recommended it to bo carried out by having a ditch fifteen feet wide dug out where the out is now. It was not till the Harbor Board took the matter up, with a view of stopping the silt deposit at the Western Quay, on the report of Mr J. T. Oarr, the Board's engineer, that the scheme took a practical shape. The scheme is wholly Mr Carr's, Mr Black never conceived anything more than a ditch, and had no idea of a weir, or tho stoppage of eilt, or the reclamation of the lagoon.
