HAWKE'S BAY V. CANTERBURY WANDERERS. [BY " LONa-LE3."] The above match, which is to be played on Farndon Park on Friday and Saturday next, is being looked forward to with great interest by the cricket-loving portion of the community. Whatever the result of the game may be, it is considered that our rojresentatives will make a great fight of it. In no previous year has Hawke's Bay been able to put such a fine all-round team into the field as that which will enter it on Friday and Saturday. With bowlers like Bees, Gore, Smith, and Bruce, and batsmen like WolHtenholme, White, and FitzHill (the Lancashire triplet), backed up by the other good bats, it is certain that Hawke's Bay will be worthily represented. A few words now as to the selection. The Selection Committee can, I think, be fairly congratulated on the judgment shown in selecting the team, "present form," and not "past glory," having evidently been their motto. As far as can be learned, the selection has given general satisfaction, with tho exception of the inclusion of Ludbrook and E. H. Williams whilst such men as Luak, Lowry, H. B. Williams, A'Deane, J. Martin, Percy, and H. Martin are left out. It is maintained that both those to whom exception is taken are poor fields. I think certainly that the inclusion of Lusk and any one of the others mentioned above would have strengthened the team all

round,

The following notes may be of interest to those who are not well acquainted with the various representatives:— Bruce.—Good bat and field; medium pace left-hand bowler, with off break.

FitzH.il!.—Fine defensive bat, with easy and pretty style ; fair field; can bowl.

Gore.—A t-teady bowler, with high though easy delivery; a fino b;tt and brilliant fiuld.

Hawkins. —A good wicket-keeper, but a rough bat; may seme, however.

Ludbrook—A. good defensive bat, with ugly style ; poor fluid ; has been a bowler. Smith.—A medium pace left-hand bowler, with good break to leg or off ; varies pitch and pace considerably ; a free bat, and fair field.

Bees.—A left-hand medium pace bowler, with leg break ; said to be one of the beet bowlers in New Zealand two years ago; a good bat and brilliant field. Taiaroa.—A hard-hitting bat and good field ; can bowl.

E. H. Williams.—A man who makes runs consistently, although not in a taking style; a fair field; cannot bowl.

Wolstenholme.—A splendid bat, ■with good def enoe ; when set puts on runs very quickly ; the fast bowler of the team ; a good field.

White.—Has represented Hawke's Bay since 1881-2 ; a fine, quick-scoring bat, wich good dsfence; good safe field, and can bowl.

Appended are the average of the above players in Cup matches during the present season, made up from the scores as given in the newspaper reports. I am unable to give the average of the bowlers.
